斜体(italics)是英语出版物中的一种倾斜字体，斜体字在英文写作特别是在学术出版中发挥一种附属性的特殊职能。使用斜体英文的场合主要有：1. 提及书本、报告、网页等完整作品的标题， 2. 引用内容期刊名和期数， 3. 统计学和代数学符号， 4. 外语单词及其缩写， 5.首次提及的专有名词和短语（后面通常跟着其定义）等。以下情况不能使用斜体：1. 表示丛书系列， 2. 引用期刊的页码， 3. 已收入英语字典的外语单词， 4.缩写的字母。
